2012 Trends: A Look at Anti-Aging, Beauty and Plastic Surgery Trends for 2012

Plastic Surgery is no longer an exclusive beauty secret of the rich and famous. As more and more people realize the incredible results the right plastic surgeon and dermatologist can provide, more people are opting in – and telling all of their friends and family about it. Just take a look at CosMed Clinic’s Facebook page this past year. In just a few short months after we launched it, we have patients sharing success stories and helping new patients ease uncertainties.   We also have our own board certified plastic surgeons and dermatologist answering questions and posting important updates on beauty and anti-aging trends.

And with Michelle Obama’s recent interview declaring that it is safe to travel to Mexico, we expect even more Americans and Canadians alike to make the journey to our brand new, state-of-art facility in Mexico.

In fact, we are in the processe of scheduling appointments for 2012. CosMed is offering 10% off all surgical fees to new patients when you schedule your first appointment and pay in full by January 31, 2012. Surgery must be completed by March 31, 2012 to take advantage of this special offer. (Contact CosMed Clinic now to take advantage of this special offer)

Here’s a look at some of the most popular plastic surgery and beauty procedures for 2012:

2011 was a big year for plastic surgery. Our patient, Tammy, was featured in Oprah Magazine after her procedures with Dr. Quiroz of CosMed Clinic in Mexico

Liposculpture (Lipoplasty/Suction Lipectomy)
Tumescence/Ultrasonic

Liposculpture continues to be one of the most commonly requested surgical procedures. It can sculpt and develop the shape of the body by removing unwanted fat from the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. Since it has become popular within the past decade, liposculpture has benefited from additional studies and refinements of the previous technique.

“While some plastic surgeons recommend Zeltiq, we still believe we can achieve better results through Liposculpture, or UAL (Ultrasound Assisted Liposculpture). In addition we can use the fat for grafting to face or hands for rejuvenation, butt or breast for augmentation. With Zeltiq fat gets destroyed.” explains CosMed Clinic’s Dr. Carlos Castaneda

Today, many different techniques and approaches of liposculpture exist to provide the optimum results for many different patients. Those who have struggled with diet and exercise can now attain desired results from liposculpture and finally remove their stubborn areas of fat.

Tummy Tucks

This major surgical procedure is typically performed with general or local anesthesia and a sedative. During a “tummy tuck,” our board-certified plastic surgeons will remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. This procedure has been preferred by women who want to improve stretched skin and muscles from pregnancy, and also to reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen.

The incision from abdominoplasty will leave a permanent scar between the hips, which can easily be concealed with a bikini. Abdominoplasty is commonly performed within approximately two to five hours, with a recovery range of around two weeks to a few months. Combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise, your tummy tuck results can last for many years

Thermage

Thermage is a non-invasive procedure that helps tighten and contour your skin in a single treatment. This is a non surgical procedure and no injections are needed. Benefits of Thermage include:

1. Tighter, smoother skin …
2. Softened wrinkles and lines …
3. Younger looking appearance.

“We recommend Thermage instead of skin rollers. While the idea is the same, triggering collagen production, it can also be done on any part of the body,” says Dr. Castaneda.

Thermage allows patients to get tighter and smoother skin with little to no downtime. Thermage uses unique radiofrequency (RF) technology to safely heat the deep layers of your skin, while cooling the surface of your skin to keep it intact during the procedure.

This deep heating stimulates your body’s natural skin renewal process, which helps tighten existing collagen and form new collagen. Over time, sagging or wrinkled skin is replaced with smoother, tighter skin; improved tone and texture; and an overall younger looking appearance.

With more and more people understanding the benefits of cosmetic surgery in 2012, we also expect to see more Fat grafting for facial rejuvenation, IPL, lasers and fat grafts for hand rejuvenation. We are also seeing more male plastic surgery.

For more information about any of these procedures, please contact CosMed Clinic directly, or fill out our private, free online virtual consultation form. A board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist will help you determine which procedures is best for you.

Exercise and the Art of Distraction

by CosMed Guest Blogger, Michelle Pearl

The art of distraction sometimes is an invaluable tool when you are trying to motivate yourself through exercise. Here are some tricks you might want to try to keep your mind off the activities happening below your neck:

Woman exercising in front of beach

Finding it hard to motivate yourself to exercise? Choosing a place with beautiful scenery or intriguing settings to distract yourself during your workout may prove invaluable in getting yourself up and out the door to exercise.

~ If you walk, run or bicycle outdoors, choose places with beautiful scenery and/or interesting sites that you can view during your workout.

~ Of course, many people find that listening to music or watching T.V. can take their minds off their muscles. You also might want to try disassociate yourself from the exercise by having a conversation (hopefully with someone other than yourself) or reading.

~ If you choose a form of exercise that is mentally challenging and makes you think (such as dance fitness, martial arts or aerobics) you will find that you often forget about how hard you are working while you are working hard to flex the metaphoric muscle between your ears.

Sometimes you might find that some of your best motivators come in the form of the mind games that you play with yourself.  Even though I usually don’t work out until the evening, I put on my exercise clothes first thing in the morning after my shower. That way, at the end of the day when it is time to go to exercise, I just get in the car and go.  Now, I realize that not everyone can walk around in exercise clothing all day, but you can come up with your own creative motivational tricks.

~ Maybe your first stop before you leave work will be the restroom where you change into your workout clothes before you take a step outside.

~ If you are planning morning workouts, set your gym bag to block your bedroom door as in intentional barrier to remind you of your commitment.

~ Recruit your spouse or best buddy as a workout partner so that you can motivate each other to follow through with an exercise plan.

~ Block off the time in your daily planner and then put as much importance on your appointment with yourself to exercise as you would with any other meeting.

After-Care Draws Americans to Cross International Borders to Obtain Health Care

Medical Tourism

It's not only the affordable medical treatment that is causing the increasing trend in medical tourism, but the treatment patients receive after their surgeries.

Medical Tourism on the Rise

As more Americans are losing health insurance, the trend to travel out of the country for affordable medical procedures is increasing. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, more than 46 million Americans are currently uninsured, making the medical procedures that are performed at a fraction of the cost in other countries more attractive.

“Medical tourism”, better-known as traveling across international borders to obtain health care, offers a variety of procedures, from dental work to cosmetic surgery, at a fraction of the cost that an individual would be charged in the United States. But, it’s not only the cost that is attracting Americans to travel to other countries such as Mexico and India to get these procedures performed; it is the after-care they are receiving.

“Rather than dreading coming to Tijuana for surgery, people are looking forward to a luxurious experience,” said Dr. Alejandro Quiroz, M.D. Chief Surgeon and founder of CosMed Clinic in Mexico. “Patients stay in nice hotels, receive personalized care, are given meals and when they leave they tell us that it feels like they are leaving a spa, rather than a medical clinic.”

Less than 20 minutes from the United States border, facilities like CosMed Clinic, located in Tijuana, Mexico, are becoming more popular and sources are predicting medical tourism to be a $100 billion industry by 2012.  While some are skeptical of traveling to another country to get a medical procedure performed, others are extremely confident in trusting the board certified surgeons to their health.

“After traveling to Tijuana for my reconstructive surgery and experiencing the treatment I received, I won’t get health care in the states again,” said Marika, a CosMed Clinic patient. “My doctor was readily available to me, always answering my questions and I walked away feeling amazing and completely satisfied with my experience.”

Introducing our Newest Guest Blogger! Michelle Pearl: Weight Loss and Fitness Expert

Michelle Pearl is the author of Wake Up, You Are Probably Never Going to Look Like That; How to be Happier, Healthier and Imperfectly Fit

Michelle Pearl is the author of "Wake Up, You Are Probably Never Going to Look Like That; How to be Happier, Healthier and Imperfectly Fit"

We are so excited to introduce  our newest guest blogger, Michelle Pearl: Fitness Professional, Author and CosMed Patient.  You’ll find her monthly blog posts about weight loss and fitness right here, on the CosMed Clinic blog. Enjoy!

When the folks at CosMed asked me if I would be interested in writing a monthly blog post on weight loss and fitness on behalf of the clinic, I jumped at the opportunity.

Although I am a fitness professional now, I spent the first several decades of my life as a morbidly obese couch potato. Then I spent the better part of another decade figuring out how to fight the obesity beast. I eventually did win the weight loss war through education, illumination and the dreaded “e” word – exercise. I have managed to keep 147 pounds off for more than 7 years now.

After gaining and losing innumerable pounds for several decades and then having lost over one hundred pounds twice, I found that my stomach was finally flat-except for a massive swath of stretched-out skin that hung underneath my navel like a stretch-mark-covered curtain. When your breasts deflate from a size 42DD to a size 36C, what’s left ends up looking like something from the pages of an old National Geographic magazine.

So I decided to have two operations. In the first they would lift my sagging breasts (no implants, thank you; I just wanted them not to hang to my waist anymore) and remove some of the massive amounts of loose skin that hung underneath my arms like old chicken wings.

I planned on following that up with another surgery six weeks later to remove the extraneous tummy skin appendage that I was sporting.

At CosMed Dr. Quiroz meticulously put the skin back into place that I had managed to stretch and expand over the countless years that I had ridden the weight-loss/weight-gain roller coaster.

I used to set off the metal detector at the airport because I had to wear two bras with under wires just to be able to support my massive breasts. I can now actually wear a halter top for the first time in my life.

Exercising and understanding how to eat properly does require a little extra effort. Taking a few trips south of the border for my surgeries did require a little extra effort. Being able to buy clothing in a size 8 and go without a bra is absolutely priceless.

Cosmetic Surgery Patient Testimonial

This Mother / Daughter team from Southern California has been coming to CosMed Clinic for 20+ years

This Mother / Daughter team from Southern California has been coming to CosMed Clinic for 20+ years

The following story was sent to CosMed Clinic by actual patients: a beautiful mother / daughter team who have enhanced their appearances with the help of Dr. Quiroz and Dr. Fuentes for more than 20 years.

About Kris and Kierstin

We hear testimonials all the time about what a great experience a patient has had. However its not often that we hear where the experience exceeded above and beyond consistently for over 20 years for not only a mother and daughter but also the 25+ friends and family they’ve referred along the way.

You may feel this is a bit lengthly but in the 10 minutes it takes you to read this, you’ll not only will be saving yourself days of research and hours of consultations  but  I hope it inspires you to put your trust into one the most respected and talented plastic surgeon teams around.

SAFTEY
I easily could start this story with how amazing Dr.Qurioz & Dr. Fuentes are but let’s face it, when it comes to cosmetic surgery in Mexico, safety is a big concern for most –even if the cosmetic surgeons are known to be the best in the world. So let’s get the safety issues out of the way first…

I want you to picture this. You drive (or rent, caravan, etc..) across the border, over a freeway, past three stops, take a right, park in a guarded parking lot, walk across the street and next thing you’re opening the doors into a Beverly Hills experience with a warm receptionist to greet you. Total time from border to door is about 18 minutes. Okay, feeling comfortable so far? As you sit down in this spa like atmosphere start talking to the few others in the waiting room and what you find just may surprise you.

Patients aren’t there because it’s affordable but rather by choice. I met a woman from Bel Air, owned clothing company and said she can afford anyone and Dr. Q is the ONLY one she’ll see.

The facility is impeccable and the personal care is beyond anything I’ve seen in the states (if you’ve noticed the downward spiral in our health care system you’d agree).  After surgery, you’re awaken by only the finest staff pampering you with attention to detail and devoted attentiveness. When ready, you’re transferred into a premium hotel conveniently located near the facility for follow up visits. The entire process seems effortless.

Now let’s have a quick chat on malpractice (as we know how sue obsessed the states are). My advice is to invest more time in finding the right doctor rather than the right attorney. If you’re concerned the moment you walk into a doctor office, you’re choosing the wrong one. Negligent doctors practice in your city, your state and around the world so don’t discriminate solely to when you cross the border.

INTEGRITY
With 20 years of personal experience and 25 referrals it’s difficult to sum up a few stories but I will do my best. I had a friend, vibrant and stunning but with tired eyes even the best MAC makeup artist couldn’t overcome. She consulted with the top Los Angeles and Newport surgeons that all concurred she needed a blow lift. One night, I introduced her to my mom’s friend (very respected woman in OC) who had a facelift with Dr. Q. Not only did she praise him as if he was her own son but finished with a story in which Dr. Q had surprised her by correcting an imperfection she mentioned that bothered her prior to surgery. Did I mention he did it free of charge? That was all my friend needed to hear to make a consultation with CosMed Clinic in Meixco.

Dr. Qurioz & Dr. Fuentes told her she didn’t need a brow lift, but $100 worth of botox injections around her eyes. No other doctor had said that.

Interesting don’t you think? The results were remarkable. How about another quick example to takeaway? I was dating a very successful plastic surgeon in the states (no name to protect the innocent) and I told him not to take it personally but I would still use my own doctor and to my surprise his reply, “I would to, he does an excellent job”.

RESULTS
I don’t go into detail about the procedures that my mom and I have had. Although we are extremely open and are thrilled to talk about it (feel free to contact CosMed Clinic and request our phone numbers), we have to say (without bragging too much) we don’t look like we’ve had anything done and we like it that way. Trust me, living in Newport Beach, I see the work of bad plastic surgeons everyday but sadly, the patients have no idea. They just keep going in for more because their doctors won’t tell them no either. Speaking of bad jobs, a longtime friend of my mom’s had a $40,000 facelift by one of the best doctors in Arizona that turned out to be a disaster (and no, I didn’t make a mistake on the price tag).  After meeting with the team, she left with tears of joy and relief (we celebrated with cadillac margaritas!) Dr. Quiroz is fixing the doctor’s mistake giving her the beautiful glow she was intended to have (for under $5,500!). Every doctor will have their best work in their portfolio so how do you find their typical results?

You read testimonials like mine that have known their doctor over 20 years and have referred countless satisfied people, one who doesn’t get rewarded in turn for testimonials (put my hand on the bible) but is writing this because she believes in his craft and his passion.

What else can I say but that Dr. Quiroz are Dr. Fuentes are masters in their field, they are true artists. Yes it’s an overused word in the world of plastic surgery but there’s no other way to describe them. While others claim to be, they are the real deal and within five minutes upon introduction, you will agree. Trust in them to change your life and you won’t be disappointed, but rather kicking yourself wondering why it took you so long.

Mexico remains a top country for cosmetic surgery for those traveling from US and Canada, as the travel costs are significantly less than other medical tourism destination

Mexico remains a top country for cosmetic surgery for those traveling from US and Canada, as the travel costs are significantly less than other medical tourism destinations.

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) released its global survey this year, which made Worldwide Plastic Surgery Statistics available for the first time.

In the survey, ISAPS announced Mexico as one of the top 5 destinations for cosmetic surgery.

While for the past ten years, the most popular surgical and non surgical procedure worldwide was breast augmentation, the 2010 study revealed new trends.

According to the article released by ISAPS, the Global Survey “reveals a new trend with liposuction representing 18.8% of all surgical procedures, followed by breast augmentation at 17%, and blepharoplasty (upper or lower eyelid lift) at 13.5%, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) at 9.4% and abdominoplasty (“Tummy Tuck”) at 7.3%.

The popularity of surgical procedures varied by country with Brazil, the United States, China and Mexico listed as top countries for the top five procedures.

“The countries where non surgical procedures were performed were dominated by the United States, Brazil, Mexico and China and to a lesser extent by Japan, Hungary, South Korea, India and Germany.”

See full newswire release on this study and more stats on cosmetic surgery trends here.

Any individual can claim to be a doctor, cosmetic surgeon or plastic surgeon. You should make it your first priority to check a physician’s credentials. A doctor’s training and certification should be appropriate to the planned procedure. Certification by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) ensures in-depth surgical training in all aspects of plastic surgery. U.S. membership in The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) means a surgeon is ABPS-certified and has met additional requirements for continuing education and experience in cosmetic surgery.

After weight loss surgery recovery in Mexico

During Marika’s recovery time in Mexico, she wanted to see the local places that only a resident knows about, so she opted to stay with a local woman recommended by CosMed who took care of her during recovery.

“Are there hotels near CosMed Clinic where I can stay during my recovery?” is a question we get a lot from our patients considering surgery in Mexico.

Our bilingual staff helps make your recovery arrangements easy by helping you to reserve a room at a discounted rate at one of the beautiful hotels near the clinic. We also work with two excellent After Care facilities with a staff well trained to assist and pamper you during your recovery.
